However, it doesn’t relate to Old 97’s because they united perfectly right away. Four musicians with different personalities and preferences came together like a puzzle in 1992.
Rhett Miller has been the vocalist throughout the band’s history. In addition, he plays guitar, which is responsible for rhythmic parts. The second guitarist in Old 97’s is Murry Hammond. He plays electric bass and acoustic guitar. Philip Peeples plays drums and Ken Bethea plays lead guitar. All members of the band accompany the main vocal part of Rhett Miller.
In 1994 and 2017, they were joined by drummers and additional guitarists, but their involvement was short-lived.
When choosing the name for their band, the members decided to associate it with the song Wreck of the Old 97 by their idol Johnny Cash. It was this song that once inspired Rhett Miller to write lyrics for his own masterpieces.
The most popular albums of the band
The band released its first album Hitchhike to Rhome in 1994. After that, the group confidently started touring the country. During a concert in Chicago, they were noticed by the independent Bloodshot Records label and offered to sign a contract. As a result of their cooperation, the second album called Wreck Your Life was released in 1995. The first albums contain many references to the musicians’ hometowns, in particular, Texas.
In 1999, Old 97’s released a new album Fight Songs, which included the song Murder (or a Heart Attack). It didn’t become popular immediately, but in 2005, the song was appreciated at a decent level. Then, the Blender magazine recognized it as the most successful among the band’s repertoire and awarded it an honorable 176th place in the ranking of most successful songs.
The album called Old 97’s, which was recorded together with the legend of country music Waylon Jennings, became the band’s iconic. It was released by the Omnivore Recordings label on October 1, 2013.
Jennings had a dream to record a joint album since he got to a concert of the Dallas band in Atlanta in 1996. Elektra Records, a representative of the band, turned to Old 97’s and told them to contact Waylon. On the same day, Rhett Miller proposed cooperation with the singer. Jennings, who had been impressed by their music for years, immediately agreed.
The Old 97’s & Waylon Jennings album consists of demos and several duets with the country singer. While working on the project, the musicians managed to find a common language and coherently write new lyrics.
For every Texas kid, the band’s New Year’s album Love the holidays is associated with the upcoming holidays. It was Rhett Miller’s idea to write festive songs. For many years, he tried to agree with other members of the team to create something new and delightful. His persistence resulted in one of the band’s most beloved albums consisting of ten tracks.
The peculiarity of Old 97’s New Year’s songs is that not all of them are about the holidays. The musicians applaud the usual winter months, which causes a direct association with Christmas and New Year.
