History of Broadway Dallas
The history of Broadway Dallas dates back to 1941, when it began as Opera Under the Stars at the Band Shell in Fair Park, Dallas. The first production was Blossom Time, an operetta-musical by composer Sigmund Romberg, which told the story of Franz Schubert’s life. Interestingly, the performances were held outdoors — an innovative idea at the time that allowed audiences to comfortably enjoy theater during the hot summer months. In fact, open-air shows were organized due to the lack of air conditioning in indoor venues.
The first season was an enormous success and was extended because of strong public interest.
When World War II began, the 1942 season was canceled, but in 1943 local businessmen established a nonprofit organization called Starlight Operettas to continue producing theatrical performances.
A key figure in the organization’s growth was Charles R. Meeker, who became its first executive director in 1944. Under his leadership, the theater flourished. Later, Starlight Operettas evolved into State Fair Musicals and moved to a new air-conditioned venue — the Music Hall at Fair Park. This upgrade provided audiences with greater comfort and a better theatrical experience.
The organization also attracted well-known Broadway stars, such as Mary Martin and Vivienne Segal, whose performances drew even more attention and contributed to the expansion of Dallas’s theater scene.
Broadway Dallas in the 21st Century
Today, Broadway Dallas thrives as a leading nonprofit organization. It not only presents world-class Broadway musicals and shows throughout the Southwestern United States but also actively expands its educational and community engagement programs.
Until 2022, the organization was known as Dallas Summer Musicals, but it rebranded to Broadway Dallas to better reflect the full scope of its mission and activities.
Broadway Dallas continues to grow and innovate. For example, in the 2024–2025 season, the organization scheduled over 77 performances, attracting more than 14.5 million theatergoers worldwide. In 2025, Broadway Dallas is offering six major premieres: The Outsiders, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Kimberly Akimbo, The Great Gatsby, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical, and Some Like It Hot.
From a financial standpoint, Broadway Dallas reported approximately $27.8 million in revenue in 2023. The organization is also deeply committed to philanthropy, raising record-breaking funds to support arts initiatives — for instance, more than $1.1 million in 2025.
Among its most notable educational programs are ConnecTix, Community Spotlight, 212° Connect, and the High School Musical Theatre Awards, which nurture young talent and encourage the continued growth of theater in Dallas.
