It was built by Karl Hoblitzelle at the corner of Commerce and St. Paul Streets. Unfortunately, the theater was destroyed by fire in 1916. The owner hired the famous Chicago architect John Eberson, who specialized in theater construction, to rebuild it. The construction cost about two million dollars and began in February 1920.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES OF THE THEATER

The building had five floors, with a large canopy over the ground floor. The facade was decorated with three-pane windows in square and arched frames. On the fifth floor, the windows were framed with elaborate moldings. The top of the building was decorated with a cornice with overhead ornamentation.

The Baroque lobby was decorated with columns, stucco moldings and carved ornaments. The floor was covered with black and white marble in the Italian style. The staircase was also made of marble. The upper four floors were used as the headquarters of the Interstate Amusement Company. In addition to the stairs, the upper floors could also be reached by elevator.

The auditorium was designed for 2400 seats, located on the ground floor and two balconies. The seats were wicker, each with a hat rack, and arranged in a fan-shaped arrangement. The ceiling was decorated in the form of a sky with clouds and stars. The walls were decorated with large paintings on panels.

The stage was located under an arch and surrounded by large columns. An orchestra pit was placed in front. Behind the stage, you could get to the dressing rooms and there was an entrance to the attic, where the scenery and lighting were adjusted.

Additional services included a children’s playroom called Majesticland, where children could have fun while their parents enjoyed the performance. There was a carousel and a petting zoo. Next to the playroom, there was also a children’s room with cribs, nurses, free milk and crackers.

There was also a separate smoking room for men, furnished with wicker chairs and sofas.

RENOVATION OF THE MAJESTIC THEATRE

When the era of vaudeville ended in the 1930s, the emphasis was placed on movie screenings.
