Pegasus Theatre

Pegasus Theatre is a Dallas-based professional nonprofit theater. It began its operations in October 1985. The theater’s permanent location is in the Deep Ellum neighborhood. From the very beginning, Pegasus Theatre aimed not only to entertain Dallas residents and visitors but also to inspire the development of local artists by engaging the community in the arts.

During its first 17 years, Pegasus Theatre created more than 100 successful productions. It became clear then that the theater would not limit itself to the local scene. In December 2002, this Dallas theater was recognized on the big stage. In New York, it became one of the producers of Off-Broadway shows. At the peak of its activity, the theater took a break for two years. After a long pause, Pegasus Theatre returned with its signature series of shows in the style of Living Black & White™. By the way, it still remains a favorite of our contemporaries.

The theater’s artistic director Kurt Kleinmann created a unique genre of productions in the style of classic black-and-white films of the 1930s and 1940s. Everything on his stage is thought out: acting, costumes, lighting. To this day, guests of Pegasus Theatre feel like watching old black-and-white movies. This feature makes Pegasus Theatre one of the best theater venues in the city.

The Majestic Theatre

The Majestic Theatre is another place that can be confidently called one of the best theater venues in the city. It combines historical traditions and contemporary art extremely well.

In fact, the Majestic Theatre was founded in 1921 as a vaudeville theater. However, over time, namely in the 1930s, when the era of comedy came to an end, it was time for movie screenings. Thus, from the very beginning of its appearance, the Majestic Theatre has become an ideal place to watch productions of any kind. It constantly adapts to the requirements and preferences of its contemporaries.

Among the locals, this theater is said to be the best place to hold many types of artistic events. The Majestic Theatre offers concerts, comedy shows and dramatic performances. In addition, the theater’s program is designed for the youngest citizens. For example, in the winter of 2024, Bluey’s Big Play theater show, a new adaptation of the children’s television series, was held for them.

Kitchen Dog Theater

Kitchen Dog Theater was founded in 1991 by a group of Southern Methodist University graduates. They began their theater work in the attic of a pawn shop in the Deep Ellum neighborhood. But eventually, thanks to their tireless work and the help of patrons, Kitchen Dog Theater got a permanent location.

This Dallas theater has repeatedly made headlines in American publications. On its stage, world premieres took place. For example, in the spring of 2019, Kitchen Dog Theater impressed all its guests with Wolf at the Door. The artistic director of the theater, Chris Carlos, was responsible for this project.

He coped with his task perfectly: the play was actively discussed even outside the city. It is believed that the success of Wolf at the Door is due to the right problem that was raised, domestic violence.

It is a pleasure for every viewer to visit a theater with such good reviews.

Pocket Sandwich Theatre

The founders of Pocket Sandwich Theatre are Rodney Dobbs and Joe Dickinson. In 1980, they stopped working with Dallas Repertory Theatre and decided to open their own theater. The men did not even think that their own business would last so long. They planned to simply find a stage on which to stage a few of their own productions, which they had dreamed of while working as actors. However, their cozy and atmospheric place in a small institution still continues to delight the townspeople with funny performances.

Usually, Pocket Sandwich Theatre’s program consists exclusively of entertaining performances. The Drunkard was the very first performance to appear on the theater’s stage. Along with the debut, the theater immediately developed some interesting traditions. For example, here you can sigh with the upset characters and throw popcorn at the villains. Such interactions have made Pocket Sandwich Theatre one of the best theater venues in the city.

Over the 40 years of its existence, the theater has staged more than 350 performances. Some of them were nominated for Leon Rabin Awards. In 2004, Dobbs and Dickinson received the Dallas Theatre League Standing Ovation Award for creating an unusual theater. That’s how Pocket Sandwich Theatre became a favorite of Dallasites.

The Granada Theater

The Granada Theater was the first theater in the Dallas market by Phil Isley Enterprises. It opened in January 1946. Since then, it has become a favorite location for city residents to relax. By the way, you can often notice that people gather near it not only to buy tickets for a performance but also to hold a wedding or other festive photo shoot.

It is not surprising that the Granada Theater has become a location for photographers as well. It is very bright and attractive from the outside. The theater building is decorated with a huge number of neon lights, which resembles the glitter of 1940s Hollywood. In addition, artists who helped design the famous Chinese Theatre in LA worked on its decoration.

In accordance with their suggestions, the theater’s design was developed as best as possible. The main hall of the Granada Theater is decorated with unusual artistic murals. The ones on the walls depict various movies, and the one on the ceiling shows a movie goddess standing over a film.

The townspeople also note that the Granada Theater has excellent service. Therefore, you can also have a delicious meal and drink there before a performance or movie.

The Lakewood Theater

You can take a break from everyday worries and plunge into the atmosphere of fun by visiting the Lakewood Theater. Its appearance dates back to the first staged play, which means 1901. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was one of the most important places for performances. In 1970, the theater building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lakewood Theater has always had a reputation as a popular venue for theater. Throughout its history, it has hosted many premiere performances that later became Broadway hits. One of them was Life With Father. In addition, the names of many world-famous actors are closely associated with this theater (Dorothy Stickney, Walter Hampden, Ethel Barrymore, Vincent Price and others).

Who knows if the Lakewood Theater would have become so popular if its manager Herbert Swett had not started to work on its rise in 1901. It is said that it was his work that helped the theater not to go into oblivion but to keep up with the times and attract more and more viewers each time.
