History of the Theater
Theatre Arlington traces its beginnings back to 1973. It was founded by local residents of Arlington who originally formed a small community group called The Potluck Players. At first, performances were held in various locations around the city. This continued until 1981, when the group purchased and renovated an old church on Division Street, transforming it into a permanent 134-seat theater.
Almost a decade later, Theatre Arlington moved to a more central and modern location at 305 W. Main St. The new venue accommodated 199 seats, and the first production staged there was “Pump Boys and Dinettes”, which premiered just before New Year’s Eve.
Over the years, Theatre Arlington has grown, evolved, and expanded. A 7,500-square-foot education center was added to support administrative functions and educational programs.
In 2016, the neighborhood where the theater is located was officially designated as the Arlington Cultural Arts District, making Theatre Arlington one of its cornerstone cultural institutions. Two years later, the theater broadened its programming and became even more popular across the region.
The global COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary closure, but Theatre Arlington received $2 million in grant funding from the city and $1.4 million in private support, which helped finance its renovation and reopening in 2022.

In the 21st century, Theatre Arlington stands as one of the leading performing arts organizations in the region, offering audiences a diverse repertoire of musicals, comedies, dramas, children’s productions, and new artistic projects. In 2023, the theater celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking the milestone with nine different productions and a special initiative called “50 Acts of Kindness”, which included a wide range of community and cultural events.
Throughout its history, Theatre Arlington has produced more than 50 seasons of performances, welcoming over 30,000 patrons each year.
Today, the theater boasts a modernized stage with a rotating platform, an upgraded lobby, expanded dressing rooms, and state-of-the-art technical equipment. Theatre Arlington presents around ten productions annually, maintains an active education program, and collaborates with local organizations — including schools, nonprofits, and community groups.
